What does Delivery Notification mean in logistics?
In logistics, a delivery notification (commonly referred to as a delivery notice or advance shipping notice) is a message announcing an upcoming delivery.
This type of notice is sent by the supplier to the recipient before the goods arrive. It is frequently used in supply chains where it is crucial for the recipient to be informed about the expected – or delayed – arrival of goods in order to make necessary preparations.
The term is also used in financial contexts, such as in payment advice or invoice advice.
Contents of a Delivery Notification
A delivery notification should always include the following information:
- The estimated time of arrival at the warehouse
- A list of the items delivered, including article numbers and quantities
Additional data such as weight, volume, or packaging units may also be included. These details are particularly important for the recipient, as they support efficient preparation for the incoming delivery. This includes allocating storage space and organizing staff for receipt and processing.
Electronic Delivery Notification (EDI)
A delivery notice sent via Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is known as an Advance Shipping Notice (ASN). Within the EDIFACT standard, this corresponds to the DESADV (Despatch Advice Message).
Shipping Notice
When the goods are physically delivered, they are often accompanied by a shipping notice, which confirms and documents the delivery.
