What is a portable data terminal?

Portable data terminals are used in logistics for mobile data collection (in German: MDE) and analysis. In terms of functionality, portable data terminals fulfill almost the same purpose as tablets or mobile phones in private use. New data can be entered and existing data retrieved by touch or with a stylus.

Devices for mobile data recording are connected to the central data processing system either via infrared, radio or an acoustic coupler. This means that the stored data can be called up at any time and from anywhere in real time. Data transmission is also possible via WLAN or the mobile data network.

Where are portable data terminals used?

In logistics, portable data terminals are mainly used in warehouses. Here they are used to record and also display current data on the stored goods. Some models also have an integrated scanner, which means they can be used for order picking work. However, they can also be used in other business processes:
