What is a storage bin?
A storage bin is a spatial unit for the logistical storage of goods and merchandise of any kind. A storage bin can be, for example, a storage space for pallets or a rack space in a high-bay warehouse.
The storage location and the storage bin are often used synonymously, but this is incorrect. While the storage bin, for example, describes a pallet storage location in the warehouse, the storage location is the entire warehouse.
How is a storage bin allocated?
A storage bin for new goods can be allocated in two different ways:
- Dynamic space system
- Fixed space system
In dynamic warehousing, the storage bins are freely assigned and are not permanently allocated to any specific goods. The next best storage location that meets the requirements of the goods is selected. This is why chaotic storage is also referred to.
With the fixed bin system, each item has its own storage bin. This may then also not be occupied by other goods.
