Terminal Computer

What is a Terminal Computer?

A Terminal Computer is a simple device for entering and displaying data. It requires minimal software and consists of a screen and keyboard. Terminal Computers are also known as ‘dumb terminals’ because they rely on the ‘intelligence’ of external systems, such as servers. Another term for Terminal Computer is PC terminal.

History and Evolution

In the early years of computerization (in the 1970s), Terminal Computers were widespread in connection with mainframes. This changed with the invention of the Personal Computer (PC) with its own processing power. In the 1980s, Terminal Computers largely disappeared from offices and were replaced by PC networks with powerful servers as central data storage units. With the advent of cloud computing, Terminal Computers as ‘thin clients’ have regained significance.

Cost Efficiency and Modern Use

Investing in a Terminal Computer instead of a traditional computer with its own processing power can help companies save costs. Outfitting an office with many Terminal Computers is much more cost-effective than purchasing numerous desktop computers or laptops. Multiple Terminal Computers can utilize the processing power of a shared server, to which the Terminal Computers can be connected. In this way, Terminal Computers can easily handle basic office tasks. Terminal Computers are also available as ‘all-in-one devices’ with integrated screens.
