What is batch picking?

In batch picking, incoming picking orders are planned and executed according to a specific principle. This type of picking is also known as multi-order picking. Different orders are grouped together and then split up again according to individual items. An order picker therefore picks large quantities of an item from the shelf in stacks, which are then distributed to the respective picking orders at the packing tables.
In this batch mode picking, the required articles are grouped together in a so-called batch, an article-only stack. In the first picking stage, they are removed from the shelf, and in the second, they are distributed again depending on the order. This is why this type of picking is also called two-stage picking.

The batch process in logistics is primarily used in these sectors:

The biggest advantage of batch picking is that it saves walking distances and therefore time.
