GLN number

What is a GLN number used for?

The abbreviation GLN stands for Global Location Number.

  • A GLN is used to identify companies and parts of companies - such as warehouse locations or branches - worldwide, making them clearly identifiable.
  • The GLN is a prerequisite for electronic data interchange (EDI). Every EDI participant must therefore have a GLN code and use it to identify themselves. The GLN code is sent with the structured information of the EDI message. Each EDI partner has its own identifier.
  • The GLN is also the prerequisite for generating GTIN or SSCC numbers.

What does a GLN consist of?

A GLN consists of 13 digits:

  • GS1 base number (GS1 prefix or country code)
  • Location reference
  • Check digit

Where can I apply for a GLN?

A GLN can be applied for at GS1. GS1, based in Brussels, is a network of non-profit organizations that develop, negotiate and maintain global standards for cross-company processes. There are 115 national GS1 organizations. To apply for a GLN, you must contact the relevant national GS1 organization. For Germany, GS1 Germany (www.gs1-germany.de) is the right contact.

What is the difference between GLN and GTIN?

  • The GLN is used to identify legal entities and locations
  • The GTIN is used to identify products and services
