Transport System

What is a Transport System?

A transport system is designed for the transportation of people, goods, animals, or data. Transport systems are essential for moving goods from one location to another. They consist of the transport goods, transport means, transport aids, and the transport process.

A transport system consists of the following components:

  • Transport aids
  • Transport goods
  • Transport means
  • Transport process

The various components are interconnected within the transport system. Examples of transport aids include handling equipment at container terminals or mobile loading forklifts (e.g., forklifts).

Depending on the mode of transport, transport means may include trucks, inland vessels, sea vessels, aircraft, or passenger and freight trains. When different transport means are combined within a transport order, it is referred to as multimodal or combined transport. The transport system, in this case, includes the pre-carriage, main carriage, and post-carriage, which are interconnected.

A specific type of transport system is driverless transport systems (DTS), which are increasingly used in intralogistics. Autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), automated conveyor technology, and driverless industrial trucks contribute to efficient processes.

Transport systems are also required for digital data. In this case, the necessary systems are generally referred to as communication systems. A communication system consists of the data transmission path and the application system, which can interpret or read the transmitted digital data.
