In an automated small parts warehouse (AKL ), small parts are stored in a space-saving manner and with full use of the room height. Unlike high-bay warehouses, small parts warehouses are always automated.
The structure of an AKL is as follows:
1. it consists of a shelving system with aisles of different sizes
2. each aisle has a storage and retrieval machine (SRM)
3. containers, cartons or trays are used to store the items
4. several picking stations are usually available
5. the racking systems have a conveyor system to transport the items from the storage and retrieval machine to the individual picking stations
6. placement stations and control software are available
Process of an automated small parts warehouse (AKL):
The order picker enters the required small parts items into the warehouse management system, which forwards the desired items to the control software. This software ensures that the required items are brought to the picking station. The order picker removes the number of items required and the bin is returned to the designated shelf.
