What is a paternoster rack?
A paternoster rack is an automated storage system for intralogistics. It works on the same principle as the paternoster elevators designed for passenger transportation. In contrast to the elevator, the paternoster rack can be used to request goods at the touch of a button.
At its core is a vertically moving carousel that is driven by electric motors. The rack is equipped with compartments, the so-called load swing trays. Depending on requirements, these trays can be subdivided with dividers. This makes paternoster shelving ideal for storing small parts. Many paternoster racks have a sheet metal cladding that protects the rack from soiling and the stored items from unauthorized access.
One of the main advantages of paternoster shelving is its extremely compact design and high output. Several building levels can be connected to the system with various removal openings. Paternoster racking is considered a flexible solution for the efficient storage, picking and retrieval of items. Another term for paternoster racking is carousel racking.
Advantages of paternoster shelving:
- Good vertical space utilization
- Ergonomic working during order picking
- Clean type of storage
- Quick access during order picking
- Compact design requires only a small footprint
- Design can be adapted to the building
- Quick amortization of investment due to good use of space and efficient picking
- Possibility to comply with the FIFO principle
